The Upper Engadin’s most romantic winter tradition
When snow in the Engadin sparkles in the sun and crisp, cold air flows through the valleys, Schlitteda is one of the most enchanting traditions. Beautifully decorated horse-drawn sleighs glide through snow-covered villages to the rhythmic sound of hooves on frozen ground and the soft crunch of snow.
In the past, Schlitteda was a special opportunity to find love, as contact between the villages was limited. This made the winter gathering all the more meaningful. Once a year, young women and men from different Upper Engadin villages would meet, get to know one another, and spend time together in the snow.
And when a spark was kindled, a fleeting glance turned into a quiet moment full of meaning. Then the young man would ask the long-awaited question: “Will you go to Schlitteda with me?”
